2009 RA Groundhog Active

The third Active event in the new EOCA Active Series was the RA Groundhog Active, which fell this year on the day before Groundhog Day, which also happened to be Super Bowl Sunday. I am not sure how many of the players were NFL fans, but it was fun to get 3 chess rounds in before the big game!

There were 8 players there by the first round, with others arriving later and playing casual unrated chess. We had one section for pairing purposes, and divided into 2 subsections. The best score in each subsection would win a custom engraved trophy, and accelerated pairings facilitated the majority of the pairings being within the same subsection. These new events normally have a trophy prize for each 5 players, but for this event, we went with 1 in 4.

In the first subsection, rated CFC Active 2068-1918, Wayne Barclay won the event, with the best score of 2.5-0.5, and also against the best competition.

In the second subsection, rated CFC Active 1918-1224, Mate Marinkovic scored 2.5-0.5 to win his second consecutive Active Series subsection trophy.

Finally, thanks to Stijn DeKerpel for helping me out yet again with onsite logistics!
